Center
Main Objective
The computer center is responsible for providing computational facility
to the institute through a institute wide network of roughly
500 machines, comprising of workstations and PCs. A fast ethernet
network comprising of layer
3 and layer 2 switches, with a mix of copper and fibre connectivity
across the
institute, has been setup and is being maintained by the computer center.
Apart
from hardware and software procurements/installation/troubleshooting etc,
the
center is also involved in software development in both Windows and
Linux platforms.
Packages developed to automate the functionings of the institute's
administration, stores and purchase departments, library management
system, visitors management system etc, are some of the softwares
developed by the centre. The page of the institute is designed,
developed and maintained by the centre. There was an active
collaboration with PhysNet,
which is the worldwide network of Physics institutions and departments from 2000 - 2003, and
the computer centre provides a mirror for that site.
The center monitors the 1.5 Mbps internet link, and has setup an
extensive set of internet servers. The institutional node for GARUDA - the national grid initiative from CDAC, is monitored by the computer center.
Current Activities
The center has recently set up a 34 node Linux cluster, on Gigabit interconnect. It is on its way to expanding this cluster to 50 nodes, on an infiniband interconnect. Maui and Torque are being used as schedular and resource manager. The cluster contains a gamut of free opensource scientific software as well as procured compilers and computational libraries and various flavors of MPI. Apart from porting different applications on the cluster, the center is actively involved in parallelizing scientific codes using MPI.
