Anomalous Phase Synchronization in Coupled Oscillators
Two coupled oscillators with a frequency mismatch rotate with a
common frequency above a critical coupling. The common notion of
transition to such phase synchrony shows monotonic decrease in
frequency mismatch of the coupled oscillators with coupling. In
contrast, the anomalous onset of phase synchronization (APS)
shows an initial increase in frequency mismatch with coupling
strength before following the usual transition to phase synchrony
with a maximum at an intermediate coupling. APS is first ob-
served, recently, in arrays of a Foodweb model for global and lo-
cal coupling. It is, later, established as a universal phe-
nomenon, as it found true for any system with an appropriate
choice of systems parameters and when two or many parameters have
functional dependence. The first experimental evidence of APS is
found, very recently, in two coupled Chua's oscillators for dif-
fusive and unidirectional coupling. Anomalous transition to both
in-phase and antiphase is observed in experiments with two cou-
pled Chua's oscillators.
