Positrons as Novel Probes of Matter

Positrons can provide valuable information on atomistic defects
in materials. Positron annihilation spectroscopy in terms of
positron lifetime, Doppler broadening and Angular correlation
techniques will be discussed. The emergence of variable low ener-
gy positron beams has enabled non-destructive depth profiling ca-
pability, thus aiding novel defect characterisation of surfaces
and interfaces of thin film structures. Important aspects of
positron beam construction viz., positron moderators, beam trans-
port and filtering will be discussed with emphasis on magnetical-
ly guided IGCAR positron beam. Selected examples on defect stud-
ies in irradiated Si, Pd/Si junctions and modified stainless
steel (D9) will be highlighted. Production of intense positrons
using buffer gas based electrostatic and magnetic trap will be
discussed. Preliminary results on Positronium production using
 buffer gases will be presented.
