Negative hydrogen ion source
(Ion source for the future NBI systems)
The colloquium will give a general overview of a negative hydro-
gen ion source, developed for high energy ( > 200keV ) neutral
beam injection (NBI) systems, which are used in the bigger size
fusion devices like JT-60, LHD etc. In the case of ITER, negative
hydrogen ion source is the only candidate for its neutral beam
system. The presentation will highlight the basic mechanisms
(plasma chemistry) for H- ion production and destruction. Differ-
ent technical and physical issues involved in the source, which
are still unresolved, will be discussed. Negative ion diagnostic
is not straightforward because the negative ion and the electron
have the same charge and it does not have any bound excited
state. Few diagnostics will be briefly introduced in the talk.
