Abstract

Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO) is a facility to carry out research work on gravitational wave (GW). LIGO uses a modified version of Michelson interferometer to detect these wave. This talk will highlight known facts about GW’s, its origin, its importance and how these exquisite waves are detected using laser interferometers. As Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Gandhinagar is one of the nodal institute in building GW observatory in India, the talk will also cover IPR’s contribution in LIGO-India project.

About the speaker

Dr. S. Sunil joined Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Gandhinagar in 1993. He has a Doctorate in Physics from University Western Australia on the study of controlling Parametric Instabilities in a Fabry-Perot cavity. His background studies include characterization of laser produced plasma and measuring electron density of scrap-off layer in Aditya tokamak. Currently, he is involved in computational aspects of ultra-high vacuum required for the successful operation of Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO).
