ASHULA

ASian core program for High energy density science Using intense LAser photons under the auspices of JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science)

[Preface]

In order to develop further the high energy density science (HEDS) in Asia, we would like to enhance the research network with Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China), Institute for Plasma Research (India), and Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (Korea) as leading institutes of each country. Several high performance laser systems can be utilized with a good coordination. Theoretical and simulation studies can be developed. Data base for atomic, molecular and plasma spectroscopy can be created. Possible areas to be covered will be (1) Relativistic laser matter interactions, (2) Plasma devices, (3) Laboratory astrophysics, (4) Particle acceleration, and (5) Material science under extreme conditions.

One of key points on this project is that we encourage the participating scientists from each country make a pair of the senior and young. By this way we can transmit the tight channel on the collaboration already existing among the well-established scientists to the younger generation.

The leaders from each country are Prof Jie Zhang at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Prof. Predhiman Krishan Kaw at the Institute for Plasma Research, and Dr. Yongjoo Rhee at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The ASHULA will include many other institutes and universities from Japan, China, India and Korea.

Promote collaborative research in high energy density science with China, India and Korea Japan from 2011 to 2016: ASHULA The acronym is based on the Persian God (China, India and Korea) of War, but very peaceful sign in Japanese Buddism.
