Abstract

Kolmogorov's 5/3-law is a cornerstone of fully developed turbulence. However, for turbulence in a density -stratified fluid, it was argued by Bolgiano (and independently by Obukhov) about fifty years ago that the 5/3  could change to 11/5. In the last several decades the 11/5  scaling had never been seen experimentally or numerically. We will discuss under what conditions would one see a 11/5 -law and show that these conditions are satisfied in the very recent simulations from IITK where this scaling has been unambiguously observed for the first time.
