Special Purpose winding Machine
Special Purpose Winding Machine(SPWM) is capable of winding large fusion relevant superconducting magnet with NbTi and Nb3Sn based cable-in-conduit-conductors (CICC) in both circular and non-circular (D shape) winding pack geometries. The winding pack dimensions could be up to five meters in the major dimensions, with a width as high as several hundreds of mm.
Experimental cryostat
The experimental cryostat (Height: ~5 m, Diameter: ~4.5 m) is a part of Superconducting Magnet Test Facility under development at IPR. It is manufactured in vertical configuration with horizontal split and Integrated with 80 K thermal shield network.
1.5kA 220V DC Power Supply
This is 1500A, 220 V continuous duty, single quadrant DC power supply having power factor of more than 0.95. Topology of it is based on phase shifted buck chopper. It is installed at Utility building of IPR. Concept of DC hybrid circuit breaker was successfully tested using this power supply. It will be used to test and validate Cu-Cr-Zr based prototype ELM coil for JET (Joint European Torus).
Special Purpose Gundrilling Machine

Special Purpose Gun-drilling Machine is used for precise drilling of OFHC billet used in manufacturing of superconducting strands. It is capable of drilling holes of diameter 3-20 mm for depth of 100 mm -1000 mm. The component with Outer diameter of 20 mm- 200 mm and the maximum length of 2000 mm can be accommodated on work table of SPGDM.
Solenoid Winding Machine
Solenoid Winding Machine is Capable of winding lab scale circular magnets (~Φ 100 mm) with copper as well as superconducting strands.
Articulated Arm CMM
The Articulated Arm CMM (ROMER 7335SI -6DOF) is used for inspection of components with contact probes(TESA TKJ 3 mm ruby / 6 mm ruby / 15 mm steel ball probes ) and non contact probes(Laser Scanner-RS1).
Development of Nb3Al Strand
In Magnet Technology Development Division, magnet with high current density has to be developed. Magnet should have sustainability of superconductivity at higher magnetic field. The superconductor for these applications requires high critical current densities Jc in high fields and high tolerance to mechanical stress and strain. The most promising conductor among the currently investigated ones is Nb3Al multifilamentary conductor
Hybrid DC Circuit Breaker for Quench Protection
Hybrid DC Circuit Breaker is basically a combination of mechanical switch and semiconductor, which is advancement over conventional mechanical breakers employed in the quench protection systems for superconducting magnet. This hybrid switch ensures arc less current commutation into dump resistor during quench condition thus countering the major flaw in conventional breakers thus ensuring a reliable quench protection system. Presently Insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) based hybrid dc circuit breaker is being investigated at IPR. This scheme has been validated through series of experiments till a current level of 1500A DC.
Tan-delta insulation testing kit
This test kit is useful for to determine quality of insulation by measuring capacitance and dissipation factor. It is used to test quality and prediction of life expectancy of insulation system. Measuring it regularly ensures the operation reliability of insulation system and to avoid insulation breakdown. Maximum voltage rating of this kit is 12 kV.
