Fusion Power Electronics Systems

Fusion Power Electronics Systems
Overview

The Fusion Power Electronic Systems (FPES) Division, established in 2016, focuses on the indigenous design and development of megawatt-class power supply systems and associated technologies for fusion research. The division emphasizes modular, scalable, and standardized architectures to enhance system reliability, availability, and maintainability while minimizing on-site inventory and installation footprint. FPES supports the Government of India's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative through indigenous technology development and collaborative programs with industry and research institutions.

FPES has established the Ultra High Voltage Systems (UHVS) Laboratory at IPR and has successfully designed and developed advanced high-voltage systems, including a 500 kV/100 mA DC power supply (scalable to 1000 kV), a 250 kV/2 A DC power supply (scalable to 500 kV), and a 300 kV multi-grid ion extraction and acceleration system for future Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) applications and high-voltage component qualification.

Critical subsystems—including high-frequency IGBT-based converters, high-voltage high-frequency transformers, Cockcroft–Walton symmetrical voltage multipliers, multilevel T-NPC inverters, transformer rectifiers, current limiting resistors, precision voltage dividers, HV earth switches, and modular resistive load banks—have been conceptualized, designed, prototyped, and validated entirely in-house, demonstrating IPR's capability in advanced fusion power electronics and ultra-high-voltage engineering.

1.500 kV High Voltage DC Power Supply System

A modular 500 kV, 100 mA High Voltage DC Power Supply, scalable to 1000 kV, has been indigenously developed for ultra-high-voltage testing and electrostatic accelerator applications. The system incorporates Cockcroft–Walton voltage multiplier technology, precision voltage measurement, protection circuits, and modular architecture for reliable and scalable operation.

2.250 kV High Voltage DC Power Supply System

A 250 kV, 2 A High Voltage DC Power Supply, scalable to 500 kV, has been developed for Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) applications. The system employs high-frequency power conversion, multilevel inverter technology, high-voltage transformer-rectifier units, and digital control to achieve regulated, low-ripple DC output.

3.High Voltage Ion Extraction and Acceleration System

A 300 kV multi-grid ion extraction and acceleration system has been developed to investigate high-voltage insulation, electric field distribution, and ion beam extraction technologies for Neutral Beam Injection systems. The facility supports high-voltage testing, electrostatic optimization, and validation of accelerator components under vacuum conditions.

4.High Voltage High Frequency Transformers

High-voltage, high-frequency transformers have been indigenously designed and developed for high-power converter applications. The transformers are optimized for compactness, high efficiency, and enhanced insulation performance, enabling reliable operation of high-voltage power supplies and accelerator systems.

5.Advanced Power Converter Development

FPESD develops high-power power electronic converters, including high-frequency DC–DC converters, AC-DC rectifiers, multilevel DC–AC inverters, transformer-rectifier units, and digital control systems. These technologies provide efficient, scalable, and reliable power conversion solutions for fusion research, particle accelerators, and other high-voltage scientific applications.
