The Mechanical Workshop at the Institute for Plasma Research is comprehensively equipped to undertake a wide range of manufacturing, machining, fabrication, and maintenance operations required for advanced scientific research. The facility houses six conventional lathe machines, capable of performing various turning operations with high precision for the manufacture of cylindrical components.
The workshop also includes a conventional milling machine, which is employed for operations such as face milling, slot cutting, surface profiling, and the machining of complex geometries. A radial drilling machine is available for drilling large and heavy workpieces with flexibility and accuracy, while three vertical drilling machines are dedicated to routine drilling operations on smaller components. For advanced precision machining, the workshop is equipped with a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine and a Vertical Machining Center (VMC). These machines are capable of performing automated milling, drilling, tapping, and other machining operations based on complex CAD/CAM designs, ensuring exceptional dimensional accuracy and repeatability.
The facility also incorporates a Water Jet Cutting Machine, which enables precise cutting of a wide variety of engineering materials without generating heat. Since the cutting process is free from thermal effects, it eliminates heat-affected zones (HAZ), preventing distortion and preserving the material's original properties. This makes the process particularly suitable for manufacturing precision components used in plasma research applications.
The workshop has also recently added an Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) Drill Machine, enabling the production of high-precision micro-holes in electrically conductive materials through spark erosion technology, thereby further enhancing the workshop's advanced machining capabilities.
