Q. Who can apply for the NFP internship?

A. Any student currently pursuing a Masters Degree in science & technology (ME, M.Tech, MSc, M.Phil etc) can apply.


Q. I am in the first year of my PG programme. Can I apply for the internship ?

A. NO. Only those students who are pursuing their final semester / year of their PG course are eligible to apply.

 

Q. What is the duration of the internship?

A. The Internship can be from a minimum of 3 months to maximum 12 months depending on the curriculum of the student’s Institute.

 

Q. Where would I have to carry out my project if I am selected for the Internship ?

A. In normal cases, the candidate is expected to work in Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) during the course of the Internship. However, in special cases, the candidate may be allowed to work in other institutes as long as the work being carried out is of direct relevance to fusion science & technology.

 

Q. What documents need to be submitted while applying for the Internship ?

A. The applicant will have to submit in print (i) Application with photograph (ii) Two letters of recommendation (confidential, in sealed envelope) (iii) Certificate of undertaking by the applicant.  Formats for all the above are available on the NFP website. Incomplete applications will be rejected without notice. Please do not send your CV/biodata.

 

Q. What is meant by "confidential letter(s) of recommendation" ?

A. The recommendation should be sealed in an envelope before it is handed over you by the recommending person.

 

Q. Will I be paid a fellowship?

A. NO. The fellowship has beeen temporarly suspended until further notice. Applicants with fellowship from their institute (for eg. GATE) are encouraged to apply.

 

Q. What is the selection procedure ?

A. The applications are called for twice a year i.e, in October for projects starting in January and in May for projects starting in July. The designated committee scrutinizes the application as well as the recommendations and draws up a list of selected candidates depending on the number of projects that are available in IPR for the internship students.

 

Q. How do I know if I am selected for the Internship ?

A. The list of selected candidates as well as the standby list will be published on the NFP website. The selected candidates will also be intimated by email / telephone of their selection. You will also receive an official letter from IPR regarding your selection and the terms & conditions.

 

Q. Will I be provided boarding / lodging if I accept the Internship ?

A. NO. Accommodation will not be provided by NFP. However, the project student is given limited access to the Institute transport facility as well as subsidized food in the Institute’s canteen. Private PG facilities are available in the locality of the Institute or along its designated transport routes.  

 

Q. What facilities am I entitled to if I take up the Internship ?

A. If you are being paid fellowship by NFP, then you are entitled to (i) Subsidized canteen and free transport facility (only along designated routes)  (ii) Library facilities.  (iii) TA/DA while on official tour as per IPR rules.


Q. I have been selected for the Internship. Will I be paid travel assistance to come to IPR to join for the Internship ?

A. Yes. A one-time, to and fro 2nd class sleeper fare will be paid from the city (as given in the application form) of the candidate to Ahmedabad.

 

Q. What documents do I have to produce while joining for the Internship ?

A. The list of documents to be produced will be listed in your offer letter. Usually the candidate is expected to produce, in ORIGINAL and one attested copies of (i) Date of birth (ii) Educational qualifications (iii) Two recent passport size photographs. (iv) Certificate of medical fitness from your nearest Civil Surgeon in a Government hospital (v) Duly filled certificate from your college/university/institute. Formats for items (iv) and (v) will be sent to you along with the offer letter.


Q. Who do I report to after I join for the Internship ?

A. Once the candidate has completed all the administrative joining procedures at the Institute (IPR), he/she should report to the NFP office (Room No. FF-09) where you will be assigned your project guide.

 

Q. Do I have a choice of projects that I can take up ?

A. Usually projects are pre-decided based on the project inputs from IPR staff and the qualifications of the candidate. However, all efforts will be made by NFP to provide projects of interest to the candidate.

 

Q. Will I be provided computer facility ?

A. NFP interns can bring their own Laptops and will be provided limited internet access (which will be monitored). Other computing facilities of the group in which the NFP intern will work will be given depending on the work requirement.


Q. Will I be given access to medical facility in case it is required during the course of the internship ?

A. IPR has an on-campus medical officer and essential medical services will be provided (as per CHSS rules) as and when required. This facility is available ONLY to those interns who are being paid fellowship by NFP.


Q. What will be my working timings during the course of the Internship  ?

A. 09:00 to 17:30, Monday to Friday are the official working hours of the institute. The NFP intern is supposed to be present full time in the institute during the course of the internship. All the closed holidays applicable to IPR can also be availed by the Intern. 


Q. I need to take leave for attending some personal function. Is it possible ?

A. Maximum of 5 consecutive days leave is possible with the prior permission of the project guide. ANY unauthorized leave will lead to truncation of the fellowship for the days of unauthorized absence. It may also lead to termination of the internship.

 

Q. I need to go back to college for my examination / viva / midterm project presentation. Will I be granted permission to do so ?

A. Typically, the student may absent himself from IPR for the above mentioned cases with prior permission of his/her project guide. Unauthorized absence of the student from IPR during the course of the Internship will lead to truncation of the fellowship for the days of unauthorized absence, or even cancellation of the internship.  All closed holidays for IPR will also be applicable to the candidate.


Q. What if I want to leave mid way through the internship ? Is it possible ?

A. While NFP expects that the Internship students complete their project, in the unavoidable event that the candidate needs to leave midway through the internship he/she has to give in writing regarding the intension to leave well in advance (minumum 1 month).

 

Q. Am I required to submit a project report to NFP ?

A. Yes. The candidate is expected to submit one copy of his/her project report to the NFP office.

 

Q. Will my project work be reviewed ?

A. Yes. The work carried out by you under the Internship will be reviewed by an expert committee appointed by NFP at the end of the project tenure.

 

Q. I need one more month to complete my project. Can I be granted the extension ?

A. Yes. Extension could be granted (with or without fellowship) on a case-to-case basis and will be decided by the NFP Committee based on a review of the student's project work. An extension request has to be submitted by the Intern at least a month before the official term of the Internship is over. This application has to be forwarded by the project guide with appropriate justifications.

 

Q. Will I be provided with a certificate ?

A. Yes. The Internship student will be provided with a certificate by NFP, subject to successful completion of the Internship project, and on receipt of the relieving order from IPR. Student can approach the NFP office for the same.  

 

Q. I have certain issues regarding my project / project guide. Whom should I contact to resolve the issues ?

A. You may contact the NFP office in case of any issues related to your project.


Q. I would like to publish the work that I carried out during the Internship tenure. What is the process ?

A. Prior sanction of NFP is mandatory for the work to be sent for publication / conference etc. Please consult your IPR project guide for the same. It is NOT recommended that the NFP intern goes back to his/her institute and publish the work from there without the prior permission of NFP / Project guide.
